Individual units used to get XP and improve over a map, but oh no, that's too much for Kite, so they dropped that out, dumbing down the game even more, but it was already dumb enough, doing it this much means I don't even want to play it after paying nearly 50 GBP for it with the ropey DLCs. This is obviously how you can combine arms across the map effectively, and they don't get lost.ģ. You obviously have to select small groups, number them up, like the game allows you to. I notice a lot of people who are lazy and like to select their entire mixed army and shove them through a town are complaining about the path-finding, well, the path-finding was just as bad 20 years ago, but more forgivable. They had the same field of vision as officers anyway, now only officers have a slightly bigger field of vision and there is little point to snipers over ordinary riflemen anymore. They then made excellent forward artillery spotters, though they did used to get spotted sometimes or were very vulnerable to map fire anyway. They did not need nerfing, as you could get some pretty good gameplay previously out of them spotting for you with "No fire" orders so they did not give themselves away.
Snipers have been nerfed and there seem to be a lot fewer of them. All these little touches are now gone as the game tries to be serious, but is necessarily a very arcadey game with ridiculously short ranges and terrible pathfinding, no more xp for soldiers or units like before, it is frankly, a poor offer from Kite compared to before and for the money they are trying to command for it.Ģ. The Russian dialogue was the funniest, especially the nurse in the ambulance, asking "What is your complaint" in Russian. Russian soldiers at rest would pee on the ground or stamp their feet, Allied soldiers would also pee on the ground and the officers would shout "For liberty" if ordered to assault. It looks awful now graphically, but all sides were shown as human.
The start of the game had some German soldiers in a Lorraine half track and they were playing "Alouette" on a harmonica, a very famous soldier's song and football chant now, then the truck gets blown up for the titlescreen. Regarding the sense of humour, in the Fireglow versions the German subMG troops at rest would smoke compulsively, if you ordered them to assault, they would say "Fuhrer und vaterland", which was funny. Therefore to me the differences with the Kite version and how bad it is for the money were pretty stark. I enjoyed replaying the maps that were not even designed for replay like now. I was playing SS1 until a few years ago, because I always had it on my laptop, which did not have a GFX card, so only limited games would work on there. What compounds the lack of game compared to the previous offerings is the fact that Kite does not replicate the humour of the previous games, meaning there is little reason to even play, and I'm looking to get the older versions again, because they play better, are funnier and you get an entire game for one price, instead of getting half a game with lots of stuff behind quite expensive DLC that doesn't even add much to the game anyway. It's not accurate and never was, which is why again what the new Devs saying that in their videos looks incongruous to me, because if I want a proper strategy and tactics game, this would never be it. For me personally the humour and cartooney graphics was what made Sudden Strike a fun game for me, which I played as downtime from serious strategy games, it still works the same, if you think this is a serious or realistic tactical game, I feel sorry for you with the frustratingly cut down ranges of all weapons in all versions to make close combat on tiny maps work well.ġ. Obviously the game was originally developed by Fireglow, not the best developer, but they had a sense of humour that they brought into the games from the off that Kite simply has not bothered with at all. Original RTS pioneer franchise dumbed-down even more than before.
